Mineral Therapy Q & A

Interview with Schüssler-Salts Expert Dr. Peter Emmrich

Dr. Peter Emmrich is an author from DHU (Deutsche Homoeopathic Union), a medical doctor, and an expert in mineral salt therapy. In this interview, he shares many interesting facts about mineral salts and why they become popular and valued by millions of people worldwide.

Q: Why are Schüssler mineral salts so popular?

A: The principle of mineral salts is to activate the body's self-healing ability. By paying attention to subtle signals from the body, diseases can be intercepted in the early stages of symptom onset, thereby enhancing physical health. According to Dr. Schüssler's theory, these mineral salts help restore balance through micro-doses of stimulation. It is a holistic therapy aimed at addressing the root causes of issues, not just the symptoms. Moreover, it is simple to use and well-tolerated. One can say: Schüssler-Salts are the ideal health companions in this day and age.

Q: What diseases can the 12 mineral salts be used for?

A: Due to their diversity and combinability, the application of Schüssler salts is very broad. Whether used as a single treatment or in combination, they can alleviate many common symptoms such as cough, sneezing, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and muscle tension. They are also suitable for contemporary ailments such as stress-related diseases, sleep problems and allergies. I use them for all patients seeking natural therapies.

Q: How do mineral salts work?

A: In many diseases, the underlying cause is often a dysfunction of cellular metabolism. Our bodies rely on essential minerals that must be available at the cellular level. However, various reasons can lead to deficiencies of certain minerals, resulting in abnormal cellular function.

Choosing the wrong supplements can also result in mineral imbalances. For example, cramps occur despite taking high doses of magnesium. This is where magnesium phosphate (No. 7) in Schüssler salts therapy begins. According to Dr. Schüssler's theory, the micro-dosage and special potencies of the minerals provide gentle stimulation to the cells, activating their self-healing abilities while regulating cell metabolism at the same time.

In simple terms, we are not merely supplementing the body with minerals but rather, supporting the body - by means of action principle - in their correct absorption and utilization.

Q: Can mineral salts be used in conjunction with other medications?

A: Yes. Conventional remedies are often not sufficiently effective on its own. In my experience it is often beneficial to take an appropriate Schüssler-Salt in addition. However, I also want to make clear that Schüssler-Salts are obviously not appropriate in every illness. Especially in severely acute or chronic diseases, it is necessary to consult your doctor and discuss the suitable treatment. But in case of many afflictions and diseases, Schüssler-Salts offer on their own or in combination with other medication a gentle and well tolerated treatment option.

Q: What should be noted when using Schüssler-Salts?

A: Mineral salts should not be swallowed; they should simply be dissolved in the mouth. Integrating mineral salts into daily life is actually quite simple.

For acute symptoms, it is generally recommended to take one tablet every half hour to an hour, up to six times per day. As symptoms improve, reduce the frequency.

For other conditions, the standard dosage is three times a day, with one to two tablets each time. Unlike most conventional medication, minerals can be taken either before or after meals, as long as there is no food in the mouth to allow for better absorption through the buccal musoca (inner cheeks).

Note: therapists may also prescribe different dosage regimens based on individual needs.

Q: How do I find out which mineral salt is suitable for what illness?

A: The use of the mineral salts is based on over 150-years of clinical experience by therapists and patients worldwide. For general conditions, there are books available as well as reliable websites specialized in Schüssler salts remedies. My advice: ask your mineral therapist for an in-depth assessment and recommendations based on individual conditions.

Q: What excites you the most personally on Schüssler-Salts-Therapy?

A: With the selection of the correct remedy, acute problems can often be successfully treated within a very short time. The therapy is inexpensive and effective. What is important to me: Schüssler-Salts are well-tolerated, there are no known side effects or interactions. Therefore, they can be taken at all ages and circumstances – as a medical practitioner I also often prescribe the salts for children with growing pains, nausea in pregnant women, or athletes for muscle ache.

Q: Can mineral salts be used to prevent diseases?

A: Absolutely. Schüssler mineral salts can be used to prevent diseases by "strengthening the constitution". They activate the self-healing power and bring the body into balance. They also make perfect sense in seasonal problems such as susceptibility to infection, and hay fever. However, for the prevention of diseases it is also vital to adjust one's lifestyle. Natural medicine always takes a holistic approach. Mineral therapy on its own is not enough.

Q: What health advice do you have for the autumn and winter seasons?

A: Besides Schüssler mineral salts, I recommend drinking enough water to keep mucous membranes moist, which can protect against cold viruses. A walk in fresh air also boosts the immune system and we get plenty of vitamin D.

Q: You recently published a biography of Dr. Schüssler. What do you think he would wish from today's medicine?

A: Dr Schüssler was an innovative and inquisitive man who thought beyond existing boundaries. I believe he would welcome more medical professionals to adopt a holistic approach and in the sense of integrative medicine. With his form of therapy, he has established a wonderful method which also allows us, as therapists, to accompany people on their individual health journey.
